一句英语翻译中的从属关系，高手进来指教。
With a fundamental principle of this nature,they very naturally go on to ask,what there is to show for the expense of a University and what is the real worth in the market of the article called "a Liberal Education,"on the supposition that it does not teach us definitely how to advance our manufactures,or to improve our land,or to better our civil economy.
这句话书上给的翻译是：秉着这个特性的基本原则，他们很自然地追问，有什么可以证明大学的开支物有所值；假定自由教育不能明确教会我们怎样促进制造业，怎样改良土壤，或怎样改善国民经济，那么这个被称为“自由教育”的商品在市场中的真正价值是什么。
我有些困惑的是，on the supposition that it does not teach blah blah blah....中的it指代的为什么是“article”,而不是"university",
所以我开始的翻译是：根据这个特性的基本原则，他们很自然地追问，如果大学不能明确教会我们如何促进制造业，怎样改良土壤，或怎样改善国民经济，那么有什么可以证明大学的开支物有所值以及被称为“自由教育”这个商品在市场中的意义是什么。
我觉得我的翻译也“make sense”，但是和标准答案还是有出入，我记得高中老师讲过定语从句修饰是不是有什么就近原则啊，但我也记得不一定都是就近原则啊。如何判断请高手指教.

2、语义通顺原则。what there is to show for the expense of a university已经是逻辑完整的论述【大学花了这么多钱，能让我们看到什么（好处）】，不必再与什么东西比较说明；而后面的促进制造、改良土壤等都是一个“商品”通常该有的属性，与the article called "a Liberal Education"正好形成对照。

这个文章应该是说英语的老外写的。说英语的人熟知哪些名词可以接动词，哪些名词不习惯接动词。
“大学”这个名词在英语中不具备连接主动型动词的资格。“大学”不会教你学习，你只是在“大学”的环境中学习而已。所以，“it”指代的不是“university”。同样原因，“it”指代的也不是“article”。“it”指代是“what is the real worth”中的“what”，说白了就是“教育体系”或者“教育制度”。
高中的英语教育，只是让你在青春期大脑的逻辑思维能力和理解力尚未发育成熟的时候，机械记忆一些语法而已。并不具备实战性。切莫陷入教条主义。

这里的University与 article是等同的，大学教育就是一个商品，一个产业，而这个article被称为Liberal Education，所以University与Liberal Education也是等同的。因此，what there is to show for the expense of a University 和 what is the real worth in the market of the article called "a Liberal Education” 这两个问题其实问的是一个意思。所以，it既可以指代University，也指代Liberal Education，你的翻译与教科书的翻译都对，说的是一个意思。
